Climate Change Laws and Greenhouse Gas Reductions

Course Content
Climate change represents one of the most urgent environmental, social and economic challenges internationally, and it is driven by human greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This course covers the following main topics: 1) International strategies and laws, including the Paris Agreement and various GHG emission trading schemes; 2) Climate change law-making in the intersection with other areas of law (security, human rights, law of the sea etc.); 3) Climate change and GHG reduction/trading policies and regulations in an international, comparative perspective. The course will end by engaging students in a set of mock global negotiations to develop a deeper understanding of climate change and GHG reduction options and challenges.
Learning Objectives
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the definitions and impacts of climate change and GHG reduction
Understand the mechanisms of climate change and norms of GHG reduction
Critically analyze cases of climate change and GHG emissions and reduction
Experience the mock global negotiation in climate change and GHG reduction
Incorporate climate change and carbon trading schemes (cap-and-trade) in business decision-making
